While I can't be sure that they were fireflies, I have seen bioluminescent insects flying around the pinelands near Mahogany Hammock in Everglades National Park. I sometimes spend a lot of time out there taking photos after dusk and I have seen 1-5 at a time on at least two occasions. The light is much whiter than the fireflies I use to chase as a kid in Kansas.
