I haven't seen any for a very long time in South Florida...but can certainly verify they were fairly common here. From 1975 to 1982 when I lived in western Boca Raton area (unincorporated PB), at the time very unpopulated and close to forest/scrub, we had them regularly in the fields behind my house. A local AM radio station had a large field with 3 radio towers (WSBR), and that entire field would have hundreds of them. I recall the numbers significantly reducing in the late 70s/early 80s, but then we moved farther east, and never saw them again since.
