Sorry for not being active on this list, I've been in Colombia 9 months of the year. Yesterday I was hiking outside in the mountains of the Aburra valley that contains Medellin, and saw what I thought was a flock of about 100 Black Vultures. Closer inspection showed they were Broad-winged Hawks! They were circling but gradually drifting out of the valley, possibly north.
It sure would be interesting to know more about how the group collects, rests, and feeds.
Anyway, to keep this relevant, it reminded me of a time from my old condo on Fort Lauderdale beach where I saw a few hundred Black Vultures. Alas I don't have a higher resolution of this photo and don't recall the date, but could these be Broad-winged Hawks?
