Bill, when I started reading this I thought "what a bummer" - because I really want to believe the bird is there and somehow managed to survive. But the article is worth reading to the end - the habitat is still worth conserving. It's not such a bummer. He doesn't say it's wrong to HOPE. So thanks for sending the link.
The article is neither too technical nor too harshly written, and is very interesting, but for those of you who don't want to read 13 pages, here's my favorite quote (Jackson 2006):
"We should continue to pursue Ivory-billed Woodpeckers across the Southeast, encouraging systematic search efforts in the best habitats available. But more importantly, we should refocus our attention on the grandeur of
old-growth forests and the importance of those
forests to migrant songbirds, wintering waterfowl, black bears (Ursus americanus), and a multitude of less-charismatic plants and animals.
In restoring and maintaining these ecosystems,
we will provide a richer world for ourselves and hope for the future."
It's like when you go to to a refuge or park, and you want to see Lifer Bird X, and you don't see Bird X but man you had a great time looking, and the fresh air and scenic vistas and the wildlife you did see really made for a great day, and you're happy the land was saved from development, and you can always come back for Bird X.
