Any birder "worth his salt" in SW Florida knows Jerry Jackson and his reputation as being an authority on IBWOs. Still, one has to wonder if at least some of the inspiration for this latest paper was prompted by "sour grapes" over the fact that he was not included in the original team who DID rediscover the IBWO in Arkansas last year. . . .
: Good evening,
:
: Many readers of this list may be unaware of the controversy among the ornitholgical community regarding the purported persistence -- indeed the "rediscovery" -- of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in Arkansas in 2004 and 2005. Although the media and various conservation organizations have spread the news as if it were documented fact, may ornithologists remain unconvinced that the documentation provided thus far conclusively (i.e., beyond reasonable doubt) proves the continued of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers.
:
: Florida's own Jerry Jackson, perhaps the most noted living authority on IBWOs, has just had published a fairly scathing rebuttal to the claim that IBWOs survive in Arkansas. It is sure to inspire much commentary, both pro an con, and may be followed by other papers disputing the "rediscovery."
