I saw something interesting today. I noticed a flock of rock doves flying what I think of as 'bait ball', very fast, tight and erratic. This almost always means there is a peregrine above them, rock doves don't respect coopers or redtails that much. They simply outfly them. As I got closer I was looking for the big bird (the falcon) and instead was suprised to see a light phase shorttailed hawk. I never have thought of them as really skilled open air flyers, but the pigeons seemed to think so. Shorttails are birders, I have never seen one actually catch a bird, but I assumed it was more of an ambush sort of thing.
