TAS Field trip to Crandon Park Beach & Gardens

8 TAS members arrived at Crandon Park Beach at 7:30, but had to wait until 8:00 for the gates to open to get in. After meeting at the Nature Center, we waited for our trip leader until 8:30, then we decided to go on our own. We walked south along the beach from the nature Center to the roped-off bird sanctuary at Life Guard Station # 10. Most of the small shore birds were in the sanctuary. Competition from the high tides, the beach-cleaning machine , and bird-chasing dogs & kids made birding a challenge. We did find several of the banded Piping Plovers, though.
From there we went inland to Crandon Gardens, where we located a small Canada Goose in the northernmost large pond of the gardens. We concluded the closest match was a Cackling (or minimas race). It is not countable, according to John Boyd. Other species of birds observed were as follows:
