The nominate (northern) race of Short-eared Owl is a rare winter visitor throughout Florida. They often prefer overgrown fields, so in south Florida, the agricultural areas are where one is most likely to encounter one. They are crepuscular, meaning they tend to hunt at dawn and dusk, so that is the best time to see one. The Arawak or Antillean race from the Caribbean, which is more buffy in color than the northern race but often difficult to distinguish, is an almost annual visitor to the Dry Tortugas, Lower Keys and possibly the southern Everglades.
