According to Pyle (_Identification Guide to North American Birds_), "The 1st PB [Prebasic which often means postjuvenal] is more protracted such that Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers retain more juvenal body plumage later into the fall and winter..." The adult Yellow-bellied Sapsucker PB occurs on the summer grounds but young Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers can be molting gradually all the way through May.
If your bird sticks around through winter, it will be interesting to compare photos.
