The call was a two syllable prrt-wheeer. as is mentioned in Kaufman's Guide.
I listen to the calls on line at Cornell's website, but they were not quite the
same as we heard. The call was more musical than the one I heard online.
The photos below show better detail of the dark border going across the tip
of the tail. These photos are slightly enhanced creating a bit more color
saturation and contrast. I didn't do that with the other photos to better show
how pale the yellow was on the belly.
I plan to return to the location of the sighting in the morning. I am hoping
for some photos from a closer range and with the intention of confirming the
tail detail. I will also take a recorder to capture the call if I hear it.
I'm also hoping for for one of our more experience birders to see the bird
and assist with the ID. To me it is easy to see the tail detail in the photos
below. But I have never seen an Ash-throated before, so I have nothing in my
memory to compare this bird to. Sibley does mention that on juvenile birds the
dark color doesn't extend across the tip of the tail and uses usually for
adults.
I think the call is going to be the best identifier. With that being the
case, from my perspective Ash-throated is still the best candidate and the only
other candidate is the Brown-Crested. In either case, it is a great bird for
south Florida. I hope others get to see it.
This photo show the whitish edges on the secondaries.
