At the behest of Rock Jetty, I headed to Homestead to look and listen for the Common Nighthawks reported by Mark two days ago. Rock heard about these last winter from some out-of-state birders, and the possibility that these may actually winter here has surfaced again. Between 6:06 and 6:12 pm, I heard 2 and saw 1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK at the Publix on US-1 just north of SW 312th Street (Campbell Drive). Now, visually nighthawks are difficult to distinguish even in daylight, so you can imagine at night. But, seeing one of them confirms that indeed it is a nighthawk. The call, however, is 100% Common Nighthawk. So, there you have it. A calling nighthawk that looks and sounds like a Common, so it must be a Common Nighthawk. I encourage others to try for them if indeed this would be a new piece of knowledge about this species: that some winter in N. America. Would be nice to check on them as winter progresses. Comments?
