This Friday and Saturday I made my first visit to Everglades National Park since mid summer and didn t find anything very surprising but had a nice couple of day of birding. Thirteen species of warblers were seen; the most interesting were Black-throated Green and Magnolia Warblers at both Royal Palm and Mahogany Hammocks. Short-tailed Hawks were seen soaring over the Lucky Hammock Annex and Royal Palm Hammock and an American Bittern was seen at Mahogany Hammock. My FOTS American Robin was found in the top of a tall snag along Research Road on Saturday. There was no sign of the Vermilion Flycatcher that has wintered in past years at the C111 bridge and no White-tailed Kites were seen along Research Road. The evening flight of Lesser Nighthawks at Lucky Hammock was described in my posting last night.

Damage from Hurricane Wilma was evident in the northern part of the park but wasn t too severe and all the trails were open and passable. The road south of Mahogany Hammock is closed to the public at this time but if all goes well Flamingo may be reopened with limited services and facilities by early January.
