Five minutes ago I was standing at my front porch window overlooking the yard wondering why the birds were so late appearing this morning. Normally, I start seeing the earliest birds between 0630 and 0645 (the Cardinals and P. Buntings.) There was not a leaf moving or any sign of a bird activity. Not till about 0730 did the Cardinal pair appear and a single male P. Bunting was seen at the back yard feeder. A few female Red-winged Blackbirds trickled in filling the ports of two caged feeders and a Bronzed Cowbird fluttered at the single feeder available for all birds. Mourning and Eurasian collared Doves searched the ground below for fallen seeds. Then in a split second, a sudden whoosh of sudden exit as all birds scattered at once. A large winged form flew right towards the window where I stood. It had missed it's opportunity for breakfast this time. Defeated on this attempt, it stood on the top of my fence preening it's feathers. It was a very large Cooper's Hawk with the long rounded tail and the dark cap contrasting with the lighter neck. It was quite an impressive sight. No photo was taken as I had the wrong lens on the camera at the time. It was quite an interesting start to the day. You just never know what will happen in your own yard from day to day. This is what makes back yard bird watching so cool!
