The C. Grackles in my yard reach through the caged feeder ( I have the Stokes Squirrel Resistant caged feeders.) with their long bills. They are able to get the seed this way and are very persistent birds. Really they don't give up---they find a way! It depends on the type of birds you have in your yard. Six feet apart is definitely not enough in my situation. Once the buntings are spooked by too many big birds they avoid the area. That is just my observation in the last twelve years that I have been getting them.
