If you can, place your old feeder that is not caged separately from your new caged one. I you have a front/back yard and separate them like that. The buntings do not like the presence of the larger and more aggressive birds. Have the caged one for the buntings very near dense shrubbery where they can hide as they are very skittish. I place a seed mix for the buntings with mostly white millet in my caged feeder for them. If you can not find a mostly white millet mix, they will eat standard wild bird seed as long as white millet is in it. I bought the white millet mix at Big Lot's. I also have water sources or bird baths in both my front/back yard. I place a standard wild bird seed mix for all the other birds. Hawks are a problem as far as yard birds are concerned. I have had Cooper's Hawks many times here. It prefers the doves as they are ground feeders and easier prey. You will see a circle of feathers in your yard if this happens. Sometimes the birds will not return for two or three days. Best of luck with your P. Buntings.
