Both scaup species have white in the secondaries. Lesser scaup have a variable amount of white in the primaries, but they show a distinct break between the secondaries and primaries. The white often ends at the primaries, but sometimes extends into the primaries, sometimes to or near the end. In Greater scaup, the white is continuous with no obvious break at the primaries. Ring-necked duck, which often flies with scaup and other ducks on sea watches, has a continuous gray stripe on the wing. Male Ring-necked ducks have a black back. Adult male Ring-necked ducks have gray on the flanks where scaup are white.
