Folks we royally messed up. On Saturday, 9/15 between 4:00 and 6:00 PM, Judd and I observed (multiple times) what at first appeared to be a female Scarlet Tanager feeding on figs by the butterfly garden.
Although the bird seemed to have wing bars, they appeared faint. We expected the wings bars to be very conspicuous if it was a Western Tanager, also some orange on the bill (according to Sibley's). Judd took some photos and that was that...until now.
Judd's photos show very obvious, in your face, wing bars. Another photo shows a dusky, as opposed to greenish, back. This is also characteristic of a Western Tanager.
Please contact Judd for the photos. I apologize if we messed up; this is a good bird for South Florida. I even told Toe as I was leaving the park that we had seen a female Scarlet. Hopefully the bird is still there.
