Ten birders assembled bright and early at 7:00 am at the Burger King parkinglot in Florida City. A Black-crowned Night-heron and a couple Common Mynas were seen before pushing off towards Lucky Hammock.

At Lucky Hammock, we had a couple Northern Harriers, Merlin, both yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Sandhill Cranes, Common Ground-doves, Barn Swallows, House Wren, White-eyed Vireo, a couple warblers (including Nashville, Northern Parula, and Northern Waterthrush), both buntings (two male Painted were seen), Blue Grosbeak, and Bobolinks. The hammock itself was a bit slow, but plenty of birds were flitting around the brushy area on the east side of the road. The Annex was pretty slow aside from a couple Northern Waterthrushes and a Baltimore Oriole.

Coe's Visitor Center just inside of Everglades National Park had a few warblers around: Black-throated Blue, Yellow-throated, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, and Ovenbird. After a walk around the parkinglot, it was off the Homestead Airport, where three Burrowing Owls were playing hide and seek. Quite a few Eastern Meadowlarks were singing in the area.

We got rained out at Mary Krome (aka Spider Land) Park, but not before adding Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Worm-eating Warbler to our day's list.

At lunch time, we headed to Castellow Hammock Park in hopes of Rufous Hummingbirds and maybe a Dickcissel or two. It was still raining a bit, and we soon found out a bunch of boy scouts were running around the butterfly garden, dressed as pirates. Despite all the noise, we managed to find two female Rufous Hummingbirds, as well as a couple Ruby-throateds. Red-eyed Vireo, Pine, Black-and-white, Prairie, and Palm Warblers were also seen. No Dickcissels... better luck next time.

Since the rain didn't stop, and didn't look like it would any time soon, we ended the trip at about 1:30 without going to Dump Marsh. We had 75 species for the trip, including 3 species I was not able to see for myself. We had some big misses since we did not check out Dump Marsh (such as Laughing Gulls and Common Moorhen). Thanks John for a short but fun trip.
