This is the first juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk I have seen. I see the similarity to an adult now that you have helped me with the ID.
The juveniles sure are a lot thinner bodied and this one is quite smaller than all of the other Red-shouldered Hawks.
I guess with time and experience I will learn to distinguish the differences and all of the many phases in these birds.
If you don't mind another question, does rust color on the shoulder almost always help you conclude it is a Red-shouldered Hawk?
O.K., A second question.
Are there any good books that would assist in identification of raptors? I have Sibley's Feild Guide. I purchased this guide because it show many views at different stages and phases.

: Your raptor is a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. The shape is wrong for an Accipiter, and a bit of rusty coloration on the top of the shoulder is visible on the righthand photo (especially on the higher-res image).
