In preparation for Tropical Audubon's first Birdathon, I decided to scout Crandon Gardens late this afternoon. [OK. I confess. Actually, I was calculating how many cheap points we can get tomorrow from the "wild" ducks, geese and swans in the gardens.] There is a female Western Spindalis close to the Gardens entrance. The white at base of primaries is distinct, as well as the light throat and eyebrow.

When entering the main gate, bear right; there will be a low, yellow, concrete wall that used to be the alligator pit for the zoo. Look in the large Strangler Fig trees and listen for the high-pitched "seet". The bird seems to be very vocal and is fairly easy to locate.

As you enter Key Biscayne via the Rickenbacker Causeway ($1), go to Crandon Park beach parking (fee). Drive to the southernmost parking area and the Gardens entrance will be directly in front.

Other legit birds: several warbler species, Gray Kingbird and Black-whiskered Vireo.
