We talked to the original observer on Monday afternoon and asked him for specifics. He told us that he found the Spindalis in a deciduous tree that is on the east side of the nature trail, just off the road and the nature trails northern origin. Click on the link for a map showing the Western Spindalis and Thick-billed Vireo locations. The photo above shows the nature trail's northern entrance which is between the No Name Harbor parking lot and the Thick-billed Vireo spot. The tree that the birder is talking about is on the left, you can see that the tree is just growing in some foliage but is almost bare. We placed an arrow in the picture to make it easy to pick out.

Wednesday morning (3/20) at 8:05 the Thick-billed Vireo sang shortly before dropping out of sight about thirty feet past the white gate, on the east side of the restricted trail. About twenty minutes later we received a message from Eric Sibbald and his father Keith that they had seen and heard the bird along with another birder in the same area.

Tuesday (3/19) just before sunset, at about ~7:15pm Mariel, Morgan Tingley, David Wilcove and I got awesome looks at the vireo. We heard the bird making its scold call repetitively and then saw some movement on the west side of the trail in a Jamaican Dogwood. We found the vireo sitting content on an exposed branch for over twenty minutes, giving us the best looks we have seen of this bird; we couldn t believe our luck! Satisfied with killer looks of the vireo we started to make our way to the car as it was getting dark, just then multiple Chuck-will s-widows started calling from around the hammock and the boy scouts camp area. One bird flew out and gave us quick looks, but as we reached the parking lot, we had two more flying over, likely catching flying insects in the street lamps.

Nature is Awesome
