An Antillean Nighthawk called and displayed over the Long Pine Key Campground at Everglades National Park every morning and evening during the time I was there from the afternoon of Friday 6/24 through Monday 6/27. It s most vocal around sunrise and sunset but it also called for a while at around 3:30 this afternoon. Its was most active around the east end of the campground lake.

The water level is high in the park and I saw King Rails a couple of times on Research Road this weekend and this morning they could be heard calling from several places along the road. It looks like the White-tailed Kites on Research Road have produced at least one fledgling. A juvenile kite with a rusty band across its breast and white feather edgings on its back was seen perched near where the kites have been seen most often this summer before it flew off towards the northwest with one of the adults not far behind. There also seemed to be a light southward movement of Purple Martins this morning in the area.

The Shiny Cowbirds couldn t be found around the Flamingo Visitor Center this Sunday and no Brown-headed Cowbirds were there seen either.

The mosquitoes are starting to get bad all over the park, Anhinga Trail wasn t that bad this morning but they are getting to be a problem in the north end of the park and are starting to become impressive around Flamingo.

Some good news; the City of Homestead has agreed to accept the old Royal Palm Visitor s Center interpretive exhibit and put it into storage until they can incorporate it into a new city hall building that they plan to build soon.
