Having dipped on the opportunity to visit the Everglades yesterday with the TAS faithful, Sunday morning dawned inauspiciously for kayak fishing for bonefish in Biscayne Bay, so I dragged my trusty DSLR out of the cabinet where it has been gathering dust, and drove over to the Matheson nursery(aka dog walk) to exercise my big lens on the wintering red headed woodpecker(s), which I had, til now, eschewed viewing. Almost immediately upon arriving , while attempting to focus on some parrots, I was greeted with unmistakable woodpecker knocking on a dead palm behind me. Two redheaded woodpeckers were quickly spotted, but technical problems requiring a quick reboot of the camera(everything is computer driven these days isn't it?)kept me from getting an image before they flew off in the direction of Hector's trailer. Eventually, the juvenile of the pair posed for some photos, near a whistling hill mynah. Another visitor later pointed out the lurking great horned owl, that he has seen regularly the last few days, and after a few photos of it, and some shots of a very distant shorttailed hawk, I called it a morning.Link to some of the photos below..
