Pyle only says that discolor has more chestnut in each age/sex category. He doesn't give any real guidance on separating them.

In breeding season, paluicola is highly coastal, mostly in mangroves. It's considered sedentary.

I have always assumed that most of the wintering Prairies away from the coast (eg. at Tall Cypress, western Miami-Dade, Anhinga Trail, Corkscrew, etc.) are the nominate race, but I haven't been able to find any hard evidence on this. Just that some migrants seem to stop and stay the winter. I suppose it could be that the coastal birds move inland during migration and that they are the ones staying.
