Yesterday 1/7 I found that the larger of the 2 cranes (a male) had injured its right foot and was limping badly. The day before it was fine. This is not good news. Despite the injury it was feeding and able to fly. I contacted FFWC, FWS, Intl Crane Fdtn (ICF), and local wildlife rehab. What I learned was that as long as the bird can feed and fly, it should not be captured. If it's down call the rehab center at 954-524-4302 with info as to location etc. Also, I learned that these birds are from an ICF flock that usually migrates with sandhills from WI, but this flock of 5 made it on their own. The ICF is tracking these birds using a satellite transmitter on the male bird. Both birds also have local transmitters but there are no trackers in the area at present.
