We went out yesterday to see if we could find razorbills in the areas where some had been reported more towards the south. Went to John U Lloyd Beach State park to get to the inlet. Didn't see much there except the usual suspects--least terns, black backed gulls, turnstones, sanderlings. But I spoke with a park ranger asking him if he had seen any of the ranzorbills (this was after loads of FWC on foot and in boats plus park rangers had a confrontation with a crazy guy who was accosting people there, us included, though he did help me pull lots of abandoned fishing line off the railing and rocks). The ranger told me a dead razorbill washed up that morning. He showed me a picture of it. Very sad. I wonder if this was the bird that was reported in that area the day before.

We continued north to FT Lauderdale beach to have a look. Nothing there as well. Spoke with the lifeguard at tower #2 asking him if he had seen any unusual birds. He told us he saw these two strange birds that morning. Playing in the surf about 10 feet offshore. He described razorbills perfectly. I told him about the razorbills and he was really excited. He has been at the beach for 30 years and has never seen anything like it. He also told me he heard radio chatter that morning from towers farther north about weird birds, so apparently there were more along that beach.

What do people think about how long they will be here? Is it possible they will be wintering here and not immediately heading north?
