Re: Great Black-Hawk seen infrequently on Virginia Key. The perched bird seen on 2003 CBC was the nominate race of urubitinga or Southern race. It has white on basal half of tail, without narrow white band at tip and has very yellow cere. Since that bird was completely black, it has to be more than 5 years old. They have a "honey/black" coloration until 5 years, including the chicks' down. The bird seen soaring during 2004 CBC had no indication of being "rigwayi" or Northern race.
Thanks Mickey, for your help. She reminds me that this (or similar) bird has been seen at this location for >15 years.
