I believe you saw a Broad-winged Hawk.

I've seen a juvenile there on several occasions, besides the nesting Coopers. He may be heading north soon, if not already. Your eyes are not deceiving you; you got the correct field marks. I hadn't seen this post, if so I would've commented earlier. A Harris's Hawk would be nice though. Remember, anything is possible in birding...just make sure you have that camera of yours handy in case.
