For Buntings I take hopper style feeders, build a cage around them with 1" x 1" hardware cloth, with enough clearence that the hopper can be suspended in the middle with 8" to 12" clearence. Randomly cut out holes to 2" by 2" the slihtly choke the top half of the hole with wire in the shape of an inverted V. This keeps every thing out but sparrows and skiny Red Winged Black birds.
I get wild bird seed at the feed store, sift it through a small holed colander to seperate the millet and use that in those feeders. Then, I have a couple divided steel hoppers, I put the remaining strained seed in one half, for the rest of the birds and sunflower seeds in the outer side for the squirrels, cardinals, jays and such.
this method has cut my seed use from 100 pounds a week to 40. If a squirrel can't remember which side is his I ping a pellet off the top until it is trained.
