I just took to putting out a pile of peanuts for the squirrels - they'd rather have that than the bird seed, so they go for the peanuts and generally leave the feeders alone (or at least less often). But of course certain birds have decided the peanuts are better than the seeds, such as the blue jays...so no system is perfect.
