In recent days, someone (I'm pretty sure I know who) has used my name to post about a Red-legged Thrush that I supposedly "verified" here in Naples, Collier Co., FL. One of the big problems with this site is that anyone can do this with virtual impunity under the cloak of anonymity. That's unfortunate. Let me just say that those of you who know me, know that I would never report a rarity or any other bird that I wasn't 100% positive I saw or verified from a reliable source! I also want to take this time to say that I will be leaving Florida for good after Labor Day (September 8th). I will be moving to the Pacific Northwest (Port Townsend, WA) where I hope to make a fresh start. Birdwise, it will be a whole new learning curve as I haven't seen many of these birds since 1997 or so when I did my "Big Year". (Yes, THE SAME YEAR the other three guys were doing their Big Year). Anyway, I look forward to the move, meeting new folks and making new friends and learning the birds there. I've made many friends here during my time in Florida, especially with those of you who have come out to STA-5 in Hendry County, where I basically led the tours out there for nearly 8 years. Of course, I've made a few enemies as well! Anyone who knows me, for good or bad, knows that I never hold back and that you always know where I stand on anything or any issue. That's always been my philosophy throughout my life and it usually has worked for me. I will miss many of you and of course birding here in South Florida, especially in winter! On an aside, I had to go by a winter coat and flannel shirts, etc. for my move as I don't think shorts, T-shirts and flip flops will make it in the Pacific Northwest! Lol. With well over 400 birds seen in Florida for the state, I feel blessed to have seen so many species and to have birded with many of you. This will be my last post to the TAS Miami Bird Board unless of course I REALLY DO find a Red-legged Thrush or other megararity! Take care everyone and good birding. If you're ever in the Pacific Northwest, please do look me up. Cheers. Vince Lucas
