On Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, catbirds are very common in the summer (which may never get here from what we've been experiencing!) and very tolerant of people. They often lurk in the bushes right at the side of our cottage and on the lane. Given what we experience once they get up north in the summer, I wouldn't think what you observed would be unusual behavior.

: I wonder if people play a part in it...
:
: I enjoy the experience too. Maybe they've become tame and more tolerant to human disturbance. However, they still flitter away through shrubbery and trees if you approach TOO closely.
:
: I agree, though. They're pretty tame.
:
: Could it be that a disease or disorder is infecting them, causing them to be weaker and less wary of human disturbance, but not actually kill the birds?

: Please reply.

: : Agreed.
: :
: : I have seen more catbirds this year than ever before (45+years of woods walking)
: :
: : They are also uncommonly (tame) (habituated) (tolerant) (approachable) your pick
: :
: : I rather enjoy the experience.....reminds me of two years past when Everglades National PArk had a very large number of cardinals both adult and young
: :
: : Who knows, maybe this portends something or other about hurricane season. For now, I simply enjoy the beauty of the moment.
