Yesterday I heard what I thought sounded like the chirps of a cardinal and I thought it was odd because our 10 acre 2 story condo community in Ft Lauderdale has a variety of trees and vegetation but is not densely wooded. This afternoon I heard the chirps again in the 20'x 30' shooting star tree with the lower branches 5' off the ground. It was jumping around in the branches while chirping and a couple of times darted out and back. Very small, grayish/white underneath, overall black on top but with thick orange stripe on wings and one time when it landed on the neighboring oak tree it spread it's tail and I could see it also had an orange stripe on the black tail. In my book it looked like the American Redstart, but the book says it's here during winter season.
Our habitat has resident mockingbirds, nighthawks, red-bellied woodpecker, blue jays and a neighboring red shoulder hawk. Every winter season I get around 3 or more of hummingbirds and stay all season, and little tiny bird grayish with light yellow underneath and for a day or two we get a flock of purple martins. Thank you for your help.
