Carlos S, Bonnie P, and I joined Bill B. on a zest-filled trip to the Palm Beach sod farms today. We later ran into Paul B. and Kevin S., and also spotted Bryant R. Our first stop were the King's Ranch fields east of US-27 where we found 2 Upland Sandpipers, but not much else except Killdeer. A field just a little north on the west side of US-27 yielded a few more shorebird species, plust Black and Gull-billed Terns, Whistling Ducks flying over, but no real notable species. There were no other really good fields until one on the south side of Brown's Farm road. The dry sod fields at six-mile bend (just past Brown's Farm Rd on 880) yielded an additional 26 Upland Sandpipers. There were some good-looking fields at Sam Center Road and Gladeview Road on the west side, but just more of the same expected shorebirds. We also saw plenty of Barn, Bank, and Cliff Swallows sitting side-by-side for comparison. We were hoping the zest would bring in the rarities, but maybe next time we'll need to take more. Although we got 18 species of shorebirds, there were not real notable species so we won't be talking about ourselves and how awesome we were. We were zesty, though.
