Two snail kites have apparently nested on the 18-mile stretch, south of Florida City, at Mile Marker 21. I saw what appeared to be pair-bonding and nest-site selection in early-mid July. By August 1, the hen was perched over what appears to be a nest. The site is about 75 meters west of the highway, in a low mangrove, and easily observed from the roadside, and with FDOT's tall fence right there, the nest site seems fairly secure. I have photos, but no time to post them this morning, so I will add them later.
