As you know, Red Tide (Karenia brevis) is caused by abnormally high concentrations of toxins formed by algal blooms. Over here on the Gulf Coast there is a Red Tide from about Sarasota down to Sanibel. It's pretty bad with many dead fish washed up on the "raked" beaches. All of the tourists are coughing with respiratory aliments and leaving in droves. To answer your question, yes, definitely, Red Tide does effect the central nervous system of birds like gulls and pelicans because these birds eat the fish that are effected by the Red Tide and thus are similarly effected. Many are being brought into the few rehab centers such as C.R.O.W. on Sanibel. Most don't make it. For more on red tides, go to:
