You have just described a Pied-billed Grebe in summer plumage, except for the red eye, which many other species of grebe do have. Again lighting conditions will play tricks on you. The genus Aytha ducks, that you mentioned, both have yellow eyes. Life is good.........pretending to be a bithornithologist.

: Please help. I see two ducks at a freshwater lake/pond. They appear to either be a Lesser Scaup or Ring Necked Duck. However, some of the markings are throwing me off. They have white bills, with a black ring around, near the tip. The also appear to have red eyes. They are mostly black, with a little white patch showing on the rump. Anyone know what this is? This lake is also frequented by 5-9 Anhingas, Canada Geese, Mallards, Green Heron and various Gulls.
