I left for Archbold this morning, where I am spending my first weekend here doing volunteer research on scrub jays. I left early and stopped at Wakodahatchee wetlands. I saw male Anhingas bringing sticks and fresh leaves to their mates on their nests, and I saw a couple of Great Blue Herons on nests. The four Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were lifers for me, and a Cave Swallow among all the Tree Swallows was a pleasant surprise. I also got killer looks of a Sora right under the boardwalk at the back of the wetlands. Purple Gallinules were everywhere. Warblers included palm, yellow-rumped, common yellowthroat, yellow-throated, and northern parula.
I spent most of the afternoon at Archbold meeting people and filling out forms, but near dusk I finally got my life Eastern Screech Owl in the parking lot, sitting right under a frond of a sabal palm and calling. After dark I heard it again in the pines near the tennis courts, along with another one. I hunkered down, waited a few minutes, and began making squeaky noises. Soon after one of the owls flew right over my head! I sat there for a while, listening to them call. Such awesome birds!
