Regarding the Barred Owls that called but were not heard, is that sort of like the noise a tree falling in the woods makes when no one's around? I'm pleased to see that Berkelean empiricism still ranks high in the birding world -- esse is percipi! Or, more prosaically, did you just mean that they weren't seen? Happy Holidays.

: Corkscrew swamp on Monday featured a red-tailed hawk that delighted visitors by a long pose (about15 minutes) at ten feet distance from the boardwalk. The bird was quite comfortable, the people quite polite, and the little children whispered. Can't say which aspect pleased me the most but the combination ranked high up on my list of magic moments.

: Titmouses (titmices?) were calling, and a very large group of blue-gray gnatcatchers were also prominent. Barred owls called but were not heard.
