Presuming that wak-wak is not wicka-wicka-yarup yarup. (Flicker, of course)

Pileated are now common in Parkland and the area where you reported is full of old pines and ancient oaks. Could be the pileated woodpecker are returning back to "old Ft.Lauderdale".
