Gomeranger????

Hi! I appreciate any knowledge anyone would pass on to me.... My husband and I were on Miami beach this week, and he helped grab a large bird that had been unable to fly for 2 or 3 days. The fishermen on the pier called it a gomerager? He was a pretty big bird, at least a foot high, with a long neck and tufts of feathers on his head. He was a dark gray all over. I have since been trying to find this guy on the web, without luck. If someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it! Thanks for your time, Vanessa
