This past week at Hoechoka Hammock (University and Sawgrass) we have been treated to sightings of bobcat, raccoons, many otters, a limpkin, spotted sandpiper, yellow crowned night heron and screech owls, but today comes the frosting on the cake.
A ground orchid appeared and it looks as if it might be a corallarhiza odontorhiza ( Luer p. 178).
The flower stem arises from the ground with no leaves showing. The plant appears to be attached to a coral rock. The bottom flowers are self pollinating and new flowers are still emerging. The plant is about 15 inches tall and the flower color is maroon/yellow maybe light brown and purple throat with white streaks. (See pictures attached.)
Any Florida native orchid lovers on this board that might want to see, photograph or help with ident on this orchid?
