I finally have a little time to be able to post some information about the Thick-billed Vireo. I saw the bird yesterday about 5:30 p.m.; it was on the left side of power pole 14 low down in the scrub. It was feeding with a Northern Parula, Red-eyed Vireo and a Palm Warbler. We had good looks at it as it worked its way south in the direction of power pole 16. This was my third sighting of the bird so I may have learned a tiny bit about a pattern that the bird has. It seems to forage at eye-level or lower and it seems to prefer feeding along the edge of the scrub. My guess as to the best way to find it is to start at power pole 16 and walk slowly in the direction of the bridge. Work your way to lucky power pole 13 where Jeff Bouton and I re-found the bird on Sunday and put a positive I.D. to it. So far it has not been found past this point to the north and has not been much past power pole 16 to the south. The length between these poles is about a quarter mile.

This bird looks a lot like a White-eyed Vireo, which you could easily pass it off as one. We were fortunate that it scolded us on Sunday so that we could easily rule out any White-eyed Vireo. The scold call of a White-eyed Vireo is kind a fast scold call, Thick-billed Vireos have the same sort of sound but much slower. I would characterize it just about like one of us human s slow pishing .

The call would be a good way to find the bird unfortunately I have not heard it call since we saw it on Sunday. I have not heard any other birders report it calling so you will just have to look for movement to get on the bird. Even though it looks like a White-eyed Vireo I have not seen any in the area and I don t think any other birders have reported one. That is a good thing so there should not be any confusion although migration is still happening so a White-eyed Vireo could show up.

If I get the chance I will put another photo of a Thick-billed Vireo on my website, one that I took in the Bahamas.
