Yesterday I had the luck of stumbling into some expert birders on Boot Key. I m a beginning birder, member of Broward Audubon and was visiting the keys with 3 other friends. We were looking for hawks, but were lucky to see the Thick-billed Vireo.
There seemed to be some confusion on directions to the location so I m going to add to it, hopefully for the better. The turnoff to the location where we observed the TBV was about 3 miles west (traveling toward Key West) of Marathon Airport. The streets in that area seem to vary from names to numbers, but the numbers near the airport are in the 80 s. The turnoff to Boot Key is at 20th Street or route 931 on the left (ocean) side. I believe the signpost is 20th street. You can see the small bridge to Boot Key easily after making the turn onto 20th Street.
20th street is about 1.25 miles east of the 7 mile bridge, so if you get to the 7 mile bridge you ve gone too far.
I believe the TBV was first spotted near the #16 pole and was moving to the north (back toward the bridge).
I m sorry that I didn t get the names of the folks who helped me spot the TBV, but would like to take this opportunity to thank them, and to say that I m always impressed by the generosity of birders towards each other.
Hope the directions help.
