It's often claimed that most Florida Short-tailed Hawks are dark morphs (e.g., Wheeler's recent book says 75%, Stevenson and Anderson suggest a 4:1 ratio). My own experience has been that they are about equally common. I've actually recorded more light morphs (53%) than dark from ca. 100 sightings.
Needless to say, this is not consistent with the claim of 75% dark morphs.
Do other people have the same experience? Or am I just missing a lot of the dark morphs?
