Indeed, I did consider the pollen idea - I can't rule it out. But the wings appeared to be quite yellow too (though in constant motion, hard to say for sure - they were a blur)...I wouldn't think the pollen could stick to the wings - but it is certainly a possibility. I'm going to try to be on the lookout for it when I get back there this weekend.
If you know of no hummingbirds that go through a yellow phase, then the pollen could be an explanation.
