The subject bird along with it's Tyrant cousins were all at this location yesterday when Bob Mellor & I went to see them yesterday, Friday 01/13/2012. Some visiting Swedish birders also got to see them. Earlier in the day, we got the Great Cormorant at Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP but dipped on the LaSagra's. (I think Robin hides it and only brings it out when she's there!). We also got the Rufous Hummingbird at Castellow Hammock along with a very large (to my eye) Ruby-throated Hummingbird. One of the coolest things we saw though was at Bill Baggs. At the infamous gate, there was a male Northern Cardinal "battling" a huge i.e. >6" larva of what appeared to be a sphinx moth of some sort. Pix were taken by my friend Bob and as soon as I get them, I'll ID the larva and hopefully the plant it was on. We were pulling for the caterpillar but ultimately, the persistence of the cardinal payed off and he flew away (struggling though) with his prize!
