Around 5:30 this evening, I heard a large congregation of White-winged Parakeets just east of the intersection of NW 17th Avenue and NW 95th Street. I believe they were in the several Royal Palms in the area, and it is a safe bet that they are roosting along the Little River Canal here. Unfortunately, I was not driving and we could not stop to confirm the amount of birds present.
Interestingly enough, the previous roost was farther down the Little River, around NE 84 Street and North Miami Avenue, which is only 1.9 miles from the "new" location.
My guess is this is the same flock that have been seeing during the morning and afternoon in the Miami Shores area, and they fly west to roost along the canals that are 2.6 miles to the WSW.
Most birders may feel a bit uneasy birding in this area of Miami. Birding from the car with the windows down should be adequate for viewing these birds.
In my opinion (and without past data), this population appears to be in between declining very slowly to stable in comparison to the population 6-8 years ago.
Alex
