White-winged Parakeets and a big year

After two failed, and hellish, attempts for this species near the Ocean Bank Building on Lejeune and 7th St., I decided to try and get my year White-winged Parakeet in the vicinity of the Miami Shores Country Club this morning. I arrived early and drove around the area, listening for any parakeets and looking for a good vantage point to stop. I found a perfect spot on 101 St. east of NE 6 Ave with parking spaces (next to a playground) and a good view of the golf course to the north. There were some ideal-looking ficus trees nearby inside the ground. One problem: when I first parked there, you guessed it, a guy fired up his leafblower! Can I ever get away from these darn things?

After some pointers from a felow birder, I tried the north area of the grounds, only to have some guys on ridig mowers working the area inside the fence. I drove around again and passing by the first spot, I noticed leafblower man was packing up. Before I even parked I heard the parakeets calling form one of those ficus trees, and soon a flock of about 15 flew right overhead. One more for the year.

Today's sighting is my 348th for the year. Of leafblowers that is. I'm having the biggest leafblower year ever! I may even break a record.
