The Picayune Strand State Forest Henslow's Sparrows was observed 17 Jan 2011 by Ron Smith, a careful birder who certainly know a Henslow's when he sees one. This report too was published by the FOS Field Observations Committee.
I suspect that the dearth of reports south of Lake Okeechobee is partly the result of the lack of sparrow banding projects in the region. I had no idea that Henslow's Sparrows were uncommon and regular winter residents until I participated in banding projects at Weekiwachee Preserve in Hernando County and Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in Okeechobee County.
Based on these results, I would predict that targeted banding efforts in pine savanna or prairie habitats at, for instance, Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest in Hendry and Collier counties, Dupuis Wildlife Management Area in Palm Beach County and Big Cypress National Preserve would locate Henslow's Sparrows, probably rather frequently.
